Protégé
Literary Journal
pro·té·gé
one who is protected or trained or whose career is furthered by a person of experience, prominence, or influence.
That is the goal of Protégé: to give young writers a place to publish, encouragement and advice for writing, and connect them with other like-minded individuals.
I believe in learning from those who came before, as well as the transfer of wisdom from the experienced to the inexperienced. To encourage this give and take, Protégé includes ‘mentor’ pieces: essays, interviews, or reflections from more experienced creatives to inspire and guide young artists.
Submission Guide
Fiction
Maximum of 10,000 words. Short stories only, no chapters or excerpts. All genres are acceptable, so long as the piece is engaging and intentional. I encourage explorations into realistic fiction.
Poetry
Maximum of 2 pages per poem. Any style, but be purposeful. You may submit up to 3 poems at a time.
Creative Nonfiction
Maximum of 10,000 words. Anything that does not fall into the category of fiction or poetry and is given artistic attention is creative nonfiction. Essays, prose pieces, reflections; all are accepted. If you have written something and don’t know what it is, it is most likely creative nonfiction.
Some Notes Before You Submit:
1. Protégé is directed toward publishing teenage authors. That being said, if you are not far over the age limit (19), you may submit. I simply ask that you clarify your age if you are over 19.
2. Look over your work. While I may do some minor grammatical fixes, I will not be going back and forth to revise your work for you. Carefully edit your pieces before sending them.
3. Protégé is a Christian-run literary journal. I do not require submissions to be overtly Christian, but I will not publish pieces that include profanity, senseless violence, sexual content, or homosexual themes.
4. Protégé is looking for both modernity and artistry. A mistake modern creators often make is to discard the lessons of the masters; pieces submitted ought to be modern and unique, but should also strive for technical eloquence.
5. You are welcome to submit to all categories simultaneously, but please follow these stipulations: up to 2 fiction pieces at a time, 3 poems at a time, 2 nonfiction pieces at a time. Please refrain from submitting multiple times per month.
6. I would like to feature multiple artists per issue, so it is unlikely your work will be selected in multiple categories at the same time (provided I have enough material). That being said, some pieces submitted will be reserved for later issues.
Mentor Piece Submission Guide
Guidelines
While your piece is not required to center directly on writing, it needs to in some way align with the mission of Protégé. It must edify creative minds, either by the sharing of experiences, ideas, or instructions. I do not accept fictional work as mentor pieces; this is a place to give your experience directly to the next generation.
-
Submissions are encouraged to stay below 7,500 words. However, do not withhold based on length alone.
